We were featured on A & E Network's Flipped OFF

Brown Interiors is happy to announce that we were featured on an A&E Network show, Flipped OFF.  The TV show premiered on April 28, 2012at 9pm central.

We were asked in the summer of last year by Departure Films if we wanted to come in and stage “flipped” homes to help them sell.  Of course, we jumped on the opportunity to work on the project.

The show features celebrity star from Survivor, Russell Hantz. Russell's brother, Shawn Hantz and their broker, Kristen Bredehoeft. The show is about flipping houses and the risks that are involved along the way.  The show is high drama, funny and dysfunctional, as Kristen says on the commercial.

Brown Interiors did the staging on "I smell a rat" episode for the show…can’t tell you the obstacles we encountered, but it was really fun to participate on the show.  We were featured on the April 28th episode. Brown Interiors will also be featured on the June 2nd and June 9th episodes as well.  Please set your DVR and/or watch the show!

Show airs Saturday evenings 9 PM central on the A & E Network.

Many people have asked me what the difference between "staging" and decorating.  When we come in to stage a home, 99% of the time it is so the home will sell.  Future home owners can better visualize living in a  home when furnishing and decor are already in place. Verses walking into an empty space.

When we are decorating a home.  We are personalizing that room/ home custom for that homeowner, working with that home owner's existing furnishings, inherited items and bringing in new furniture, accessories, paint etc. to make the space reflect their personalities.

After the episode airs on TV we will post "after" photos of the home.

Titanic Belfast

April 15th was the is 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. This tragedy seems to somehow always captivate people's interest. Countless documentaries, movies, shows, books, paintings and more have been created to try to explain and recount the stories of survivors. Even the 1997 hit movie is being re-released so that everyone can experience the fictional tragic love story of Rose and Jack. It may have something to do with the time period. 1900-1918 have always been a source of fascination, many of our favorite books, movies, and TV shows are also set during this period, including, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, and even Downton Abbey. The years leading up to World War I in the United Kingdom were full of wonderful designs and a happiness and peace that wasn't regained for decades.

Modern and out of the box architecture has taken the place of Edwardian Baroque design but there is a new museum in Belfast, Ireland that embraces both the old and the new. The Titanic Belfast is a place for visitors to flock in order to re live and imagine life of the Titanic. It opened in late March of 2012 as a tribute to the city that birthed the infamous ship. It holds "nine galleries of interactive exhibition space, including a dark ride, underwater exploration theatre, recreations of the ship's decks and cabins and a luxurious conference and banqueting suite". The structure is clad with aluminum pieces and surrounded by reflecting pools in order to create the desired effect. The building itself was influenced by ..."maritime themes, including ice crystals, ships' hulls and the insignia of the White Star Line" but it looks eerily like an iceberg to me!

Here are a few photos of the project but check out the link to read and see more:

Heights Baptist Church Remodel

Heights Baptist Church Remodel:

Myself, Jody and one of our fabulous designers, Catherine were asked to do the selections for the re-design of Height's Baptist Church sanctuary. They were looking for a more modern, up to date look. To start we painted the entire ceiling and back drop behind the stage black. (See below) This does two things first it draws your eye right to the focal point the cross in the back of the stage. Secondly, it allows you to concentrate on what is happening on the stage instead of looking at all the light cans, sound screens and distractions.

We also changed the wall color to a richer color called Quiver Tan by Sherwin Williams. The carpet we replaced with Effervescent Bubble and then not pictured we coordinated the connecting room in carpet Atoll Stripe. The sound panels on the wall were covered in a fabric the exact shade of Universal Khaki by Sherwin Williams.

Next was the stage. The church has a removable piece that they use for everyday service, but remove for weddings so the entire staircase is exposed, when the piece is missing. I really wanted to showcase the stage in the sanctuary, by adding a darker wood floor and stain to the baptistery. At first, we weren't sure if the removable piece would be possible but we figured it out and it turned out fantastic.

We are thrilled with the outcome as are the members at Height's Baptist. We are doubly honored b/c the church just asked us to come back and start on their youth sanctuary!

All construction was installed by Palcon Construction and floors were selected at Texan Floor Service.

Tahiti bathroom

Welcome home. We just finished working on this master bathroom remodel. The goal was for the homeowners to feel like they were on vacation in Tahiti when they were in their bathroom. I think we did an excellent job interpreting their goals and dreams.

In the first photo the star of the room was the rectangular floating bathtub. We wanted to showcase this area, so we framed both side walls in a split face Versailles patterned travertine. The back wall we faux painted to look like antique highly distressed with faded water cracks. New chandelier in oil rubbed bronze dressed up with just a touch of crystals. The floor is done in a pebble pattern stone design, so feel like you are walking off onto the beach.

Close up view of the walls and paint.

"Car wash" Shower. Rain head, shower head and four body sprays makes this shower pretty fantastic. We decorated the walls of the shower to mimic the area around the bath tub. Using the spit face Versailles pattern on top, paired with a stone and glass listell, then brought in the larger travertine tiles from the flooring to lead your eye up the wall. What you can't see in the picture is the floor of the shower is done in the pebble stones as well.

Cabinets were glazed to look antique, rugged and worn. Dressed with square oil rubbed bronze hardware to match and a slab of travertine for the counter top.

Vegas Baby

I had the privilege to go to Las Vegas for a furniture show. I know why companies are moving so many events to Las Vegas, including one of the largest furniture markets available to attend. The design and imagination is incredible. It is true inspiring to me. Every inch of every space has been thought out. The colors are vivid and bold, light fixtures over scaled and immaculate. As a designer, its one of the coolest places to visit.

Below is the Parasol bar. You sit on plush red upholstery. The cocktail waitresses bring you tomato potato chips (that's hard to say) but they are delicious to eat. The ceilings are stenciled and illuminated to showcase beautiful chandeliers. Nestled by thick rich striped draperies you feel so separated from the hustle around you. I believe every home can have a touch of glamour and this look can be recreated in many places, at a price that is in most budgets!

Check out this statue, WOW. I love the human form first and the idea of mother nature intertwining with the human body seems so sexy to me. Surrounded by red, when in this space you feel power, love, endless emotions that you yearn to keep feeling.
Think about adding a harlequin wall to your home. Stencils can be created in 2-D or 3-D effects. You can add decorative tacks to each intersection. Think swarovski crystals on the intersections in pink for a little girls "princess" room.

When you come down this escalator the ceiling is full of different shape parasols the walls are tiled in intricate mosaic patterns, as well as the floors. Also on the ceiling are appliques of an array of flowers that lead your eye to the next mystical and amazing space.

This was one of my favorite chandeliers. Wrapped in silk fabric mixed with metal accents, illuminated by glass decor. So fine!

And then... a whole entire space decorated like a chandelier! Everywhere you look its dipping in glass beads. I literally ate lunch inside a chandelier.

Last but not least... how I spent my afternoon before I had to get on the plane. Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton you know just how to make a girl happy!

Remember what happens in Vegas... stays in Vegas ;)
